I am currently fighting a charge that I'm not guilty of, I'm low income and have very little resources, I had a court appointed attorney but I was unhappy with him, initially. So, with the help of a friend, I was able to get free consultation. I walked into his office on time and sat in his tiny, cramped office. His door was wide open and he was socializing with someone who I assume was a colleague, must have been about 20 minutes before he finally called me in. He was dismissive, rude, and mentioned I take a no contest plea, I asked what that meant and pretty much lied about what it meant, I only found out what it meant when I did my own research, so I didnt take the plea. He also called the DA on speakerphone without the DAs knowledge, and because the sun journal did an article on my case, the DA said if I didnt talk to the media any more, there wont be anymore problems (which is considered intimidation and illegal), of course, its my word against theirs. I consulted with him again a few months later with the hopes of a more productive and informative meeting, and he was even worse than before. I was crying and scared because the charge I got is a felony, something that has already begun to ruin my life, even though I havent been convicted, people already see me as guilty. Every time I tried to speak, he told me to shut up and pretty much get over it, take a plea deal or face the consequences, but Im not one to back down. I refuse to let the prosecutor silence me and I wasnt going to allow Bettis to silence me or treat me like that either. He yelled at me to shut up or get out of the office, then later I found out he told a mutual family friend that I threatened him, which was a blatant lie (I absolutely despise any type of violence). I was sobbing uncontrollably, had a meltdown in the parking lot and felt pretty traumatized by how I was treated, I didnt really understand what I did to deserve that treatment, I still dont, I felt dehumanized and worthless. I have no doubt he has helped others in the past, he is considered one of the best in New Bern but I have a feeling the more you pay him, the more hell care about your case. I heard he was all about the people and justice, but if youre poor, he sees you as the dirt under his shoes. Im not saying dont go to him, but stay guarded, as he lacks compassion and empathy. Also, make sure you do your research, if you dont understand the terminology and the law, know your rights, and dont take advice from him blindly. If I didnt have guidance and support in my life, I probably would have ended up in an even darker and deeper hole, if I had taken his legal advice.

Lee Bettis was amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable about my particular traffic problem (family member w/a missing court date, huge fine, arrest warrant) and walked me through the process, reassuring me the whole way. Then, when he found out I wasn't in his area of service and I therefore couldn't ask him to represent the case, he cheerfully continued explaining the process and making sure I was comfortable with the next steps to take. I would HIGHLY recommend him.

We havent been to court just yet but I can say the office does communicate with you....also he explained everything to me and had no problems repeating what I didnt understand We hired two different lawyers before him and he is already taking steps that the others didnt....so far so good I will change my score once we get further on in our journey Hopefully it goes from a 4 to a 5

Bettis is a mess, he's often seen in court bumbling around looking disheveled. If the presiding judge doesn't feel sorry for him then they are openly annoyed by him. So you start off on a bad foot being associated w/ a known irritant.

Lee Bettis is very unorganized & often disrupts court proceedings because he leaves before his cases are heard & they have to wait to have him paged. Nice enough guy but definitely not who you want as your representative in criminal court.

Great Lawyer

Initially came in to hire him for 2 cases. He charged me $500 and told me he would handle one case and continue the other for a few months to give me time to come up with the money. I called him today to see if he was still continuing my case. And apparently he doesn't remember he said that. Unreliable.
