Joel is a very caring, competent lawyer. He listens to all your concerns and helps you navigate all your legal needs. He is excellent, timely and thorough in his communications with the court and Judge pleading your case. He is also a great negotiator and polite but firm in dealing with opposing counselor. So many Attorney's are arrogant and can impede your success at a favorable outcome. Bot not Joel. He will have the Judge on your side because of his professional and unassuming manner. He is also excellent and thorough at writing court briefs and Judgement documents to the court to make sure all your needs are met and to plead your case. You definitely won't be disappointed hiring Joel,. He will have your back!

I was leaving an abusive marriage. I was scared. Joel was willing to meet me during a terrible snow storm so divorce papers could be filed the day I left. He was responsive and reassuring through the entire process.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE HIRING THIS ATTORNEY. I hired Joel as my attorney and was forced to fire him after about 3 weeks due to incompetence. I am amazed that he has positive reviews and I relied on these reviews to hire him. Joel basically gave away my parenting time because he seemed intimidated by my wife's attorney. He also gave me incorrect information on multiple occasions. He told me that I would not be paying child support until the divorce was final. I confirmed this with him several times and I based my moving out of the house and other financial decisions on this information. He said that support payments only begin before the divorce is final in cases of 'extreme need' and my case was certainly not a case of extreme need. When he then told me a week or so later that payment would start now I was shocked. His response was 'that's the way I usually do it'. Unfortunately, I later learned that the law does not work this way. After all the other misinformation that I received from Joel, this was the final straw and I had to fire him and seek other counsel. I interviewed numerous attorneys in my search for a new one. Every other attorney I talked to was perplexed by, and several laughed out loud, when I told them what Joel had told me. He refused to refund my money when I asked. Knowing when support payments start seems like the most basic of basic things that a divorce attorney should know. I am still amazed that Joel has a license to practice divorce law and I am currently filing a complaint to the Michigan Bar Association. The divorce process is difficult enough without having an incompetent lawyer. I liked Joel as a person as he seems like a nice guy, but I felt it necessary to post this review as I suffered great emotional and financial pain due to his inaccurate information and would not want anyone else to go through that.Joel maybe great at signing his name in divorces that are amenable and therefore get positive reviews but if your divorce is not amenable then you need a real divorce attorney not Joel

Just about a year ago I was on my way out to the courthouse in Grandhaven to file papers for divorce. I was encouraged by a friend to contact Alger Family Law because they didn't want me to regret any decision I was about to make or go through something so major on my own with no legal advice. I didnt hire Joel but I know someones ex who did and Joel is a awful attorney. His tactic is to send court papers to the wrong addresss so ppl dont have a chance to submit an answer back. Hes a lier and has no problem using minor aged children to bully the other party by saying hell bring the children to court against the other parent. Who happens to be a GREAT parent! After a court order has been entered he also sends a 7 day rule to the judge that is completely changed of the judgment which is also the same paper he sends to the wrong address.In response to Alger family law response...How can you claim that Ive never been a party to any case that Alger family law has been involved in when JOEL himself tried to use a scare tactic and claimed he was gonna subpoena me into court? Once again, Joel is a liar . I know attorneys bend the truth but Joel is flat out a liar and and intentionally screws ppl over.
