Although in the end the matter did not proceed, Mr. Smith continually followed up with me from the time of consultation by email and provided advice on potential next steps. I have been in court for the last decade fighting a highly contentious, international divorce/custody/child abduction battle. I had sole physical custody and lived in Manitoba lawfully with my son since he was only a few months old. At a hearing in Hawaii I didnt know about and was not present for, a judge reversed custody. My Ex then came to Manitoba and abducted our 3 year old toddler to Hawaii during a court ordered visit. I hired Ed after a bunch of other lawyers failed to get my kid back. My precedent setting case was heard at different levels of court in 2 different countries, including federal court. It is now mandatory study in Manitoba law school. The case required inter-judicial communication to be resolved. After jurisdiction got sorted out and I got my kid back there was a custody trial in Canada. Then I had to get my Canadian orders regarding costs and child support registered, recognized and enforced in Hawaii. My Ex never stopped harassing us. I still have to deal with ongoing safety and access issues. I definitely needed Eds sound legal advice throughout my journey. He does good work and went above and beyond. My Canadian lawyer is Carla Paul from the law firm Levine, Tadman and Golub. Carla has been my only lawyer in Canada. I went through a list of lawyers in Honolulu. Carla fired them all, except for Ed. If you knew Carla, small in stature but big in bite, you would understand this is probably the highest accolade a family lawyer could receiveWas never fired by Carla Paul on behalf of her client, in 6 years! I have first hand experience with many different attorneys both on my side and on my Exs side. I have gained insight into the crazy profession of family law. I think overall, Ed is a good lawyer respected by the courts. He writes well and is experienced. He knows law and tries to get the best deal for clients under the circumstances. My case did take a long time to be resolved but it was complicated and screwed up before Ed took it on. Plus my Ex is a raging narcissist with deep pockets with whom you can never reason (not a good combo). My Ex never acts in our childs best interest but instead uses him like a pawn in his game of revenge. I now have sole custody. My Ex lost all his parental rights except for supervised skype visits at my discretion. As a person, I think Ed is a super intelligent, empathetic guy, maybe a bit eccentric. He can come off as gruff but I would rather have somebody tell me things straight up then not. There are evil, soulless, family lawyers out there who do anything for profit, even if it means harming the very people who the laws were written to protect. But Ed does have good morals (despite the fact he is a lawyer, LOL). Hes not the best at explaining things but in my case it was OK. Ed explained things to Carla, and she explained it to me in Mom talk, not legal jargon. I also had the peace of mind knowing both lawyers would come to some agreement on how to proceed even though they had very different perspectives. US Law is vastly different from the Queen's bench. Ed floated me for a few years until my file was closed once I was totally out of funds. For this I will be forever grateful. If it werent for Ed I wouldve had to wait longer for my son to be returned, during which time my son would have undoubtedly suffered permanent psychological damage. Or perhaps Hawaii would not have relinquished jurisdiction, in which case I would have no custody in the country where my kid was abducted to. I wouldve had to give up my career and relocate to HI to fight for access to my kid for who knows how long? I shudder to think of horrible scenarios and suffering my son and I might have had to endure if I had not found Eds website online. My son was rescued at age 4. He is now 9 and doing well. I hope you are never in a situation that needs to be settled in court. However, If you need a fair, empathetic, thorough lawyer, I highly recommend Edward Smith.

The worst experience ever. He nearly caused me to lose my only son to his father who had been married several time and already had several children with other women because he said he could no longer fight and it was a battle I should just give up on my only child. Its unfortunate he could not be the lawyer I expected him to be continues to leave his bill on my credit report. After all was said and done I found out my ex-husband paid him a lump sum to tell him to just give up my only child. He nearly ruined my life and my only child's life. And yes I made a mistake marrying a man who I thought changed but to find out he did not change cost me so much more. My son means the world to me and nearly losing him was not worth the expense of this lawyer be aware it just takes a lump sum to pay him off and you could lose your child/ren. He doesn't fight for you he fights for his money.

I would not hire Edward Smith as my attorney. He did not do a good job on my divorce or my fiance visa. I had to hire other people to complete the job.
